COMIC ART BATTLE!!!

HH hosted the “Comic Art Battles” on August 28, 2008 as part of the Popular Print Cultures Conference.
It was a very cool and fun event performed in front of (and with!) a crowd. I, the Shepherd,
was hosting/moderating, and we had two teams - Team Eisner (Bob Prodor and Rudi Gunther) and
Team Kirby (Andrew Foley and Jeff Martin) participating, and boy howdy was it a close contest!

There were some great guests, including creator Trina Robbins (recently seen in HH's "Girls Drawn Wild"), Rachel Edidin, assistant editor from Dark Horse, and local author (and comic geek) Minister Faust!

Here's the run-down of the events, as well as which team the audience voted for each time.

Challenge 1 – Foundation Challenge. Draw an audience member performing an activity (golfing).

Team Kirby (Andrew)

Team Eisner (Bob)
The Winner: Team Kirby!

Challenge 2 – Creative Draftsmanship. Draw an image from an adjective (rhetorical), noun (chicken) and verb (space-faring) as selected by the audience.

Team Kirby (Jeff)

Team Eisner (Rudi)
The Winner: Team Eisner!

Challenge 3 – Exquisite Corpse. With a cause of death selected by the audience (ennui), each team will draw one half of the corpse.

Team Kirby (Andrew)

Team Eisner (Rudi)
The Winner: Team Kirby!

Challenge 4 – Create-A-Hero. Each team creates a hero based on the audience’s selection of a power (flatulence) and a weakness (sarcasm).

Team Kirby (Jeff)

Team Eisner (Bob)
The Winner: Team Eisner!

Challenge 5 – Battle Royale. With 2 armies suggested by the audience (rabbits & Spartans), each team has 2 artists drawing simultaneously their army in battle.
